Skunked at Sunfish Worlds

Published on October 27th, 2021

Sarasota, FL (October 27, 2021) – The wind gods didn’t smile on the 50th Sunfish World Championship today for the 100 sailors as a lack of pop prevented any racing.

With hopes of completing three races, the day began with a two-hour shoreside postponement before sailors made their way out into the Bay to await the arrival of the sea breeze. At about 1400, the first of the westerly breeze started to make its way across the water…only to dissipate. Just after 1600, it had become apparent that the wind wasn’t going to arrive and the Race Committee raised AP over Alpha.

Back on shore, however, the regatta’s activities continued. In addition to the competing sailors, at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron there were over a dozen of the Sunfish Class’ long term members whose days of small boat racing may be behind them, but they still love remaining part of the Sunfish Class and community.

Included in the entourage of past Sunfish luminaries are Don and Jean Bergman – Don has record for the second highest of World Championships attended and Jean is a past Class President; Past Class President Andres Santana and his wife Adalade from the Dominican Republic, Rapid and Donna Buttner – Class Historian from CT; David and Peggy Frith from Bermuda, and Henry and Carolyn DeWolfe, former sailors; former Class President Alan Scharfe (MA), and former Class Administrators Terry and Peg Beadle.

Racing will resume tomorrow morning unless the front moving around in the Gulf of Mexico decides to come ashore.

The 50th edition is being held on October 25-29. A total of 12 races are scheduled to be raced.
