Game on at Youth Match Racing Worlds

Published on July 19th, 2022

Twelve teams will vie for the 2022 Youth Match Racing World Championship title on July 19-23 in Pornichet, France. Sailed in J/80s on France’s Atlantic coast, advance practice was prevented due to public gatherings being banned, but the order was lifted at 12:00 UTC on July 19 to allow racing to proceed.

After David Wood (USA) with crew Max Mayol, Daniel Pegg, and Marbella Marlo won the 2021 title, runner-up Jeffrey Peterson (USA) returns with his team of Max Brennan, Scott Mais, and Sammantha Hemans for redemption.

Also returning from 2021 to improve their scores are skippers Riccardo Sepe (ITA-3rd), Emil Kjaer (DEN-4th), Marius Westerlind (SWE-7th), and Thimoté Polet (FRA-8th).

With a reduced field of nine teams in 2021 due to pandemic travel restrictions, the 2022 edition is at full strength as perennially strong teams from Oceania led by Finn Tapper (AUS) and Robbie McCutcheon (NZL) are back.

The format calls for a single round robin to advance the top eight teams to the knock-out rounds, with the top two teams to compete in a best of five match to determine the champion.
