Standing on the shoulders of giants

The selection committee of the U.S. National Sailing Hall of Fame too often struggles to highlight the early contributors of the sport, preferring to recognize more familiar individuals.

Sir Isaac Newton, the famous English scientist, once said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Charlie Morgan was one of those giants, and I hope his recent passing will rekindle interest in his Hall of Fame nomination for the Class of 2023.

I am a massive fan of the institution, yet hope it refines its effort to preserve the full history of the sport. While early achievements may not seem so grand when comparing to today’s standards, they were grand when they occurred, and that should be the measure.
