Results update at College Team Race Nationals
Published on June 2nd, 2023
Kings Point, NY (June 2, 2023) – An update at the 2023 College Open Team Race National Championship found winner Harvard University, led by skippers Lachlain McGranahan ’24, Justin Callahan ’26, and Mitchell Callahan ’26, had retired from a race after the trophy presentation.
While the impact of this action did not change the results for Harvard and Stanford, which finished first and second respectively, it did boost Brown from fifth to third. Previously, Yale was third and Dartmouth was fourth, but the revised results now has them in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Open Team Race Nationals were held May 27-29, and it was after winning the title when the Harvard coaches had a chance to review the video of race 141 against Brown University. Using the Digital N course, the video showed a Harvard boat hitting Mark 4, and after indicating they would take a penalty for the infraction, they failed to take that penalty.
Under Rule D1.3b, “When a boat clearly indicates that she will take a penalty under rule 44.1, she shall take that penalty.” In the absence of taking the penalty, the team chose to retire after finishing from that race. As a result of this action, Brown scored an additional win, moving to third place.
