Orca attack The Ocean Race

Published on June 22nd, 2023

(June 22, 2023; Day 8) – As the final leg of The Ocean Race passed along the western shore of Europe before turning in to the Mediterranean, the course was also passing through an area notorious for orca attacks on boats. With seven boats in the fleet, two VO65s today had direct encounters with the killer whales.

The incidents occurred in the Atlantic Ocean to the west of Gibraltar when Team JAJO and Mirpuri Trifork Racing were approached by orcas around 1450 UTC. While there were no injuries and no damage to their boats, the orcas pushing up against, or in at least one case, rammed the boat and bit at the rudders.

“Three orcas came straight at us and started hitting the rudders,” said said Team JAJO skipper Jelmer van Beek. “Impressive to see the orcas, beautiful animals, but also a dangerous moment for us as a team. We took down the sails and slowed down the boat as quickly as possible and luckily after a few attacks they went away… This was a scary moment.”

The area around Gibraltar is becoming well known for ‘orca attacks’ on boats, where an individual or pod of orcas repeatedly ram into a boat’s hull or rudders. In some cases, boats have been significantly damaged – at least three to the point of sinking.

Team JAJO captured excellent video of the attack:

The Ocean Race (formerly Volvo Ocean Race and Whitbread Round the World Race) was initially to be raced in two classes of boats: the high-performance, foiling, IMOCA 60 class and the one-design VO65 class which has been used for the last two editions of the race.

However, only the IMOCAs will be racing round the world while the VO65s will race in The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint which competes in Legs 1, 6, and 7 of The Ocean Race course.

Additionally, The Ocean Race also features the In-Port Series with races at seven of the course’s stopover cities around the world which allow local fans to get up close and personal to the teams as they battle it out around a short inshore course.

Although in-port races do not count towards a team’s overall points score, they do play an important part in the overall rankings as the In-Port Race Series standings are used to break any points ties that occur during the race around the world.

Held every three or four years since 1973, the 14th edition of The Ocean Race was originally planned for 2021-22 but was postponed one year due to the pandemic, with the first leg starting on January 15, 2023.
