67th annual Wirth Munroe Race
Published on December 1st, 2023
Victor Wild’s Botin TP52 FOX was first overall and first in ORC A in the Sailfish Club of Florida’s 67th annual Wirth Munroe Race from Miami to Palm Beach on December 1.
Thirty boats from 14 states enjoyed ideal reaching conditions for the coastal classic dating back to 1957, with southeast breezes of 12-15 knots and warm temperatures. The 60-mile Classic course from Miami to Palm Beach is the second event of the 2023-24 Islands in the Stream Series.
Space Monkey, the Mills 68 owned by David Greenstein and Stephen Murray, took line honors, completing the course in 4:19:45 and breaking the previous monohull elapsed time record of 4:25:49 set in 2018 by Bella Mente, a 72-footer designed by Botin Partners. Jason Carroll’s MOD70 Argo holds the multihull elapsed time record of 2:36:35 set in 2022.
Following FOX in ORC A were Leo Vasiliev’s HH42 Inception and Austin and Gwen Fragomen’s Botin 44 Interlodge IV. Interlodge IV also won perpetual trophies for first Sailfish Club yacht to finish and best corrected time for a Sailfish Club yacht.
Chris Saxton’s J/125 Vortices 2 won ORC B, followed by Jon Desmond’s Mills 41 Final Final and Terry McSweeney’s Melges 32 Flat Stanley Racing.
John Harvey’s J/120 Sleeping Tiger South won ORC C, followed by Chris Lewis’ J/44 Kenai and the Farr 395 Senara owned by Eamonn deLisser and James Bill.
On the shorter 40-mile Sprint course from Fort Lauderdale to Palm Beach, Carl Kah III’s Class40 Privateer won ORC D, followed by Martin Roesch’s Class40 Velocity and FK Day’s Class40 Longbow. (The Sprint course is not scored as part of the Islands in the Stream series.)
Olivier Pouille’s Beneteau Oceanis 45 Scirocco won the PHRF class. Alan Moore’s Corsair 28R was first in the multihull class.
The Sailfish Club partners with Storm Trysail Club, SORC and Biscayne Bay Yacht Club for management of the event.
