At 86, Peter Harken (above, left) remains as excited as ever about the company he and his brother, Olaf, founded. Here’s an excerpt of an interview by Wendy Mitman Clarke (above, right) for SAIL magazine:


When this thing started, did you ever have any notion at all of where it was really going to go?

None. We had no notion. We really didn’t plan that thing. We were kind of working from day to day, you know, we called it one foot at a time, and we were just too busy to really sit down and think of a long-range plan or anything like that. Just kept plodding along and it just grew, each step grew a little bit, and there we are. I mean, we’ve been at this for a long time. You know, there was there was no real future plan in it.
