SailGP: No love with Canada and USA?

Published on June 17th, 2024

While high performance achievement has been the dominant gateway for SailGP athletes, the Canadian and USA teams are led by helms that made their name in the boxing ring, specifically on the World Match Racing Tour.

The two teams are alongside each other in the overall rankings, and if the latest episode of the league’s Racing on the Edge video series is to be believed, Phil Robertson for Canada and Taylor Canfield for USA are not besties.

“I’d say Phil is probably more on the arrogant side to be honest,” said Canfield. “He always seems to be talking down to people like he’s almost above and better than them.”

Robertson clapped back saying: “I think the first time I raced against Taylor Canfield was in 2009 and at that moment he was an arrogant little college kid. And the only thing that has changed since is that Taylor is no longer at college.”

Mike Buckley, US Team CEO and Strategist had the last word, commenting, “When Phil is good enough to race for his own country [New Zealand], then he can start running his mouth.”

The next opportunity for these teams to throw punches will be on June 22-23 at the United States Sail Grand Prix on New York harbor. For the team crew lists, click here.
