Justin Callahan, Sailor of the Month

Published on September 26th, 2024

Seahorse magazine hosts a monthly poll to recognize recent achievement, and in October 2024 it was a dinghy face-off between collegiate superstar Justan Callahan (USA) and Peruvian Olympic medalist Stefano Peschiera, with American fans pushing Callahan ahead.

His nomination:
Another US young gun rising quickly through the ranks. Racing with his twin brother Mitchell Callahan recently won the 2024 Snipe Junior World Championship before returning to Harvard to resume his studies, as well as racing in Etchells and J/70s. In fact, Callahan only dips into the Snipe class a few times each year, making this result all the more impressive. Early mentors include Augie Diaz – which speaks well of the young man! A busy college sailing season now beckons.

Comments from voters:
‘Justin is the greatest!!!’– Laura Schueneman; ‘Outstanding young man!’ – Carol O’Malley; ‘A class act’ – Laura Burns; ‘One of the most hardworking team mates I know’ – Marlo; ‘Huge competitive drive and a great person’ – Joshua Bartoszuk; ‘Justin is one of the most committed sailors in the world. And his sailing career is only just beginning’ – Linda Lindquist; ‘He also won the Hinman and the US Snipe Nationals’ – Arthur Blodgett; ‘I just soo want Justin to win!!!’ – Ronnie Shamieh.

It’s been a good year for USA as Callahan follows monthly winners Sally Honey, Cole Brauer, and Michelle Lahrkamp.
