US SailGP Team working to grow interest

Published on March 11th, 2025

Upon buying the United States SailGP Team in November 2023, CEO Mike Buckley noted how there are three pillars they were pursuing:

1. The race to commercial viability
2. The race to change the sport
3. The race around the buoys

When Buckley added, “I’m not sure the third is the most important thing,” league CEO Russell Coutts replied, “I’m not sure how many sports teams in the world do well commercially when they’re finishing at the back of the fleet.”

As the team sits 11th out of 12 on the leaderboard, their effort to gain commercial support will be tested as the team reveals new initiatives to grow fan interest.

DJ Khaled, a Grammy-winning DJ, record producer, and hype man, is now on the US team’s board of directors to attract new fans. “Our goal is to bring SailGP to the mainstream, and the mainstream to SailGP,” said Buckley. “These are the small chess moves to do that.”

The team has also launched a new platform – Fan Capital – for fans to engage with the team through email newsletters, team website, and app. “Sailing has been a niche sport for a long time, but one of our goals since taking ownership in 2023 has been to bring sailing and SailGP to a broader audience.”

If Coutts is right, a good finish would help their cause at Los Angeles SailGP on March 15-16.
