New regulations for Kiwi championships

Published on August 6th, 2025

For there to be a World Championship, regulations established by World Sailing must be fulfilled. While the sport has a lot of world titles (arguably, too many), the international federation seeks for events under their purview to be representative of the best in the world. Some are, some not as much.

But what about National Championships? I am a five-time Lido 14 US National Champion but rarely (ever?) raced against anyone beyond the Pacific Time Zone. Not very national. I don’t know if US Sailing has any oversight, but New Zealand has new criteria for an event to be approved as a national championship and for the winner to be recognized as the national champion.

To qualify as a national championship, an event must be approved by Yachting New Zealand. The organizing authority – typically the host club, in partnership with the class association and a race officer – must notify Yachting New Zealand at least six months in advance. This initiates a review by the race management sub-committee, ensuring all documentation meets national standards and connecting organizers with experienced support where needed. – Full report
