There’s a Snipe hunt in San Diego
Published on August 21st, 2025
If California is ranked America’s most fun state, San Diego must be its ‘most fun’ city. Beyond the ideal climate and famous zoo is some sweet sailing, with San Diego Yacht Club as a frequent host for championship racing.
Last year it was the Star World Championship, and next year, with boats already onsite, is the Etchells World Championship. But for the next couple weeks, the Snipe Class has taken over the property. A container of new boats arrived for two events to be held on the “Coronado Roads” course in the Pacific Ocean southeast of Point Loma:
• The North American Championship on August 22-24 has 34 boats registered, with 2024 champion Ernesto Rodriguez taking on a youth surge in the class led by 2025 Junior National Champions Owen Fretwell and Colin Krebs who beat Rodriguez at the 2025 Nationals. – Details
• Held biennially in opposite years of the World Championship is the Western Hemisphere & Asia Championship on September 2-6. This closed event has country-specific quotas, attracting 28 boats from eight nations with past champions Augie Diaz (2002, 2021) and Ernest Rodriguez (2010, 2018) looking to reclaim the title. – Details
