Making noise amid the sounds of silence

Published on October 8th, 2025

We could always count on the America’s Cup to make frequent headlines. While only held every three to four years, there was enough bickering, rumors, and boat porn to fill the gaps. But today, the sounds of silence make more noise. For the 2027 event, we only know that a Kiwi team and a British team will race old boats for an older trophy. Yea!

Breaking the stillness is an old friend, Argo Challenge, with their ambitious goal to participate in the 38th America’s Cup with an international sailing team composed of male and female athletes with physical disabilities. We last heard from them as they unsuccessfully sought entry in the 2013 America’s Cup, and they are back to garner support for their social project.

“This is a possible challenge because this type of boat can be sailed safely, even by sailors with physical disabilities,” says Lars Grael, a highly talented Brazilian sailor with two Olympic medals. “There is no shortage of high-level male and female sailors with disabilities, so with adequate training, there is a possibility of being competitive.”
