Program under review for 2032 Olympics

Published on April 27th, 2026

As part of its effort to remain relevant in the rapidly changing Olympics, World Sailing reviews at least four of the 10 events on the Olympic Program every four years, and the Men’s Kite, Women’s Kite, Mixed Dinghy (470), and Mixed Multihull (Nacra 17) were selected for the 20232 Games.

Stable for now are the Men’s and Women’s One Person Dinghy (ILCA), Men’s and Women’s Skiff (49er), and Men’s and Women’s Windsurfing (iQFOiL) events. For the other four events, proposals are now being submitted, and while the LA28 program is encouraged to provide stability, change is a frequent suggestion for 2032.

There are nations wanting to switch from kites to wingoils, while one of the wilder ideas offers a Mixed 8-Team Tournament using the Star Sailors League’s 47-footer. Keelboat team and fleet racing is being advocated while a foiling one-person dinghy wants consideration.

Self-interest is always an issue when reviewing the Olympic Program, and the Nacra 17 Class better get ready to defend their position. Based on estimates, it is the most expensive equipment and has lowest participation. Not a good mix.
