Wind-powered tech and luxury design

Calling the Orient Express Corinthian the world’s largest sailing yacht is akin to calling the Empire State Building the world’s tallest gift store. However, the 722-footer, which is essentially a cruise ship with masts, does mark a major milestone for modern wind-powered vessels.

The project has been under development for around ten years. Engineers and designers worked to combine large-scale cruise capability with wind propulsion technology, creating a vessel that stands apart from conventional ships in both size and function.

Sea trials conducted in February demonstrated the ship’s capabilities. In winds of about 20 knots, the yacht reached speeds of 12 knots using sail power alone. The masts can also tilt up to 70 degrees, allowing the ship to pass under lower bridges when required.

The ship features 54 suites ranging from 485 to 2,476 square feet, each with large windows or private terraces and dedicated butler service. Guests also have access to five restaurants led by Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno, eight bars, a spa, a pool, and a marina. – Full report
