Remembering Blackaller – A Most Colorful Sailing Legend

Tom Blackaller died in 1989, but he packed a lot of life in his 49 years. His accomplishments earned him induction to the National Sailing Hall of Fame, and memories of his legendary character live on in the wide net that he cast.

His home base, St Francis Yacht Club, organized a cross country conference call in which notable members of Tom’s sphere share stories and tall tales about one of sailing’s most colorful skippers. From Admiral’s Cup to America’s Cup, they reminisce and roast the wicked-fast wisecracker who could sail the paint off boats and ended a lifetime of carousing when he fell head-over-heels in love at 46—and died just three years later.
