Celebrating the spirit of sailing

Published on July 30th, 2024

Designed by Cap’t Nathanael Herreshoff, the first H Class hulls began construction in 1913, and their use continues as 28 H12 teams traveled to the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard for the 2024 H Class Championship hosted by Edgartown Yacht Club on July 27-28.

These classic little gaff-rigged sloops hark back to the golden age of sailboat design, with five clubs taking turns hosting the annual championship, with teams from all five – from across New England and from as far away as Shelter Island, New York – taking part in the 2024 edition.

Terry Cronburg’s Lorelei defended his 2023 title, and at 79 years, was recognized as the top-scoring skipper over age 65. His victory also contributed to Buzzards Yacht Club winning the team award, with Lorelei’s winning score joined by Josh Legg’s #245 Bumble at fourth place and Stephen Braese’s #336 Sunbeam at fifth.

“Imagine having 57 sailors gather in an old Massachusetts whaling village to race sailboats designed 110 years ago,” said Event chair Marnie McLagan. “It was a true celebration of the spirit of sailing.”
