USA Wins Optimist Team Racing Worlds

Published on July 3rd, 2016

After two days of competition on July 2-3, Team USA is the 2016 Optimist Team Racing World Champions, topping 48 countries in a light air event at Vilamoura, Portugal. Sailing for USA were Justin Callahan (Florida/Rhode Island), Zane Rogers (Texas), Bella Casseretto (Florida), Sam Bruce (Maryland), and Thomas Hall (Pennsylvania).

The conditions prevented the completion of the full schedule, which ended before the Semi Final match in the losers bracket between Argentina and Italy. The winner of that match was to face USA which had qualified for the Finals through the winners bracket. Based on the scoring rules, Argentina finished second with Italy in third.
