VIDEO: Old school playtime

Published on January 14th, 2019

The Exumas are a chain of islands in the Bahamas that stretch to about 100 miles long, with Georgetown located on Great Exuma Island as the capital of the Exumas. Located in Georgetown is the Exuma Sailing Club, of which Dallas Knowles is a tireless volunteer.

As Dallas seeks to share sailing with the local community, he is doing the same with his young boys. While organized classes with instruction help to advance sailing skills, messing around with boats offers many lessons too. Dallas shares how his boys are messing around:

“Joss and Emit finally got a chance to try out their newest Christmas presents: a pair of authentic Gum Elemi boats made by boat builder Lloyd Sands of Andros. Named after the native tree they were mostly made out of, these cool little racing boats are still referred to as ‘Gum Elemi Boats’ even though they could be made out of a variety of woods.

“Young kids throughout the islands would have grown up in the past playing with these home made little fully usable sailboats. These days they are all but non existent, but thanks to Mr. Sands, Joss and Emit can still experience a little ‘old school’ playtime. I think they enjoyed it too!”
