Skunked at 470 Europeans

Published on May 13th, 2019

Sanremo, Italy (May 13, 2019) – No luck today at the 470 Europeans as the wind conditions were too strong to enable any racing for the men/mixed and women teams. Enduring a gusty breeze exceeding 40 knows, race officials were patient for improved conditions but shortly before 6 pm had to give up and were forced to display the AP flag.

With six fleet races concluded, the top ten teams move directly to the medal races tomorrow for the final day of competition. The first warning signal is scheduled for 11:00 for the women, followed by the men at 11.45.

It’s notable how the standings are so close that almost all the crews have a chance to grab a medal, making it for a super exciting and dramatic conclusion to the 470 Europeans.

Representing North America are three teams from the USA: Stuart McNay and David Hughes in 15th, Atlantic Brugman and Nora Brugman in 30th, and Nikole Barnes and Lara Dallman-Weiss in 37th after not competing on day one due to illness.

Racing at the 470 European Championship is on May 9 to 14 in Marina degli Aregai, Italy.

The 470 Europeans consist of a series of fleet races and a final medal race, if more than five qualifying races have been completed, for the top 10 teams in each fleet. The racing will be on windward/leeward or trapezoid courses. The championship has an open format, that means that non-Europeans crews can compete but cannot run for the European title.
