Published on September 6th, 2019

Muskegon Lake, MI (September 6, 2019) – Day one of E Scow US Nationals on Muskegon Lake had 78 boats complete three races in overcast conditions. Southwest winds at about 8-12 knots welcomed the sailors as they headed out for the day. Once the fleet got out to the race course the winds slowly tapered off and shifted NW with winds ranging from 5-14 knots for the three races. After day one Clay Johnson and Brian Porter are tied in first with 13 points followed by Harry Melges IV in third with 25 points.

Report for Day 1 – Clay Johnson
Today was a great first day of the E Scow Nationals. We had really puffy, shifty lake sailing and Bruce Gollison and the RC did a nice job running three quality races. We found success by having solid starts, minimizing tacks early, staying in the pressure upwind, and being aggressive on the downwind. It was not an easy day with so many talented sailors in the fleet. We’re looking forward to more racing tomorrow.
