Leaders extend at Sunfish Youth and Master Worlds

Published on September 24th, 2019

Bonaire (September 24, 2019) – The second day of the Sunfish Youth and Master World Championship continued a fluky theme as winds ranged from 5-8 knots with a 2-minute gust of 13-15 in Race 2. The wind direction varied from 180 to 220 degrees causing the Race Committee to slow things down to let the wind settle but were still able to complete three races.

Defending Sunfish Youth World Champion Simon Gomez Ortiz of Colombia won the day with a 1-1-5, opening his leading margin to 13 points over Fernanda San Roman of Peru (above) with Diego Castro of Guatemala in third, 19 points off the lead. Two more races are scheduled for tomorrow final day of the Championship.

Masters leader Alex Zimmerman of Peru drove another nail into the coffin with a 1-3-1 scoreline today to increase his lead to 11 points over Jason Pigot of the USA with local Bonaire sailor Sipke Stapert two points further back in third. With two races scheduled for tomorrow’s finale, unless the wheels fall off Zimmerman’s Sunfish, he will be hard to beat.
