Sun rising in Tokyo, Falling in Dakar

• Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike has claimed successfully holding the Olympics and Paralympics in 2021 would be a “symbol” of the world overcoming the coronavirus pandemic. Koike, who was re-elected as Governor in a landslide result earlier this month, revealed her determination to host the Tokyo 2020 Games next year.

“I want to host them as a symbol of the world coming together to overcome this tough situation and of strengthened bonds among humankind,” she said, as reported by Reuters.

Koike’s statement comes at a time when the number of coronavirus cases in the Japanese capital is high, but she claimed increased testing had led to the surge, with night-time businesses encouraged to have their staff tested. Full report.

• The fourth summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games, hosted by Dakar in 2022, has been postponed to 2026. Sailing has been part of the competition since Singapore hosted the first event in 2010, with five events held at Buenos Aires 2018: Girl’s and Boy’s Kiteboarding (Twin Tip Racing), Mixed Multihull (Nacra 15), Girl’s and Boy’s Windsurfing (Techno 293+).

The postponement was needed for the International Olympic Committee, the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and the International Federations (IFs) to better plan their activities, which have been strongly affected by the postponement of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, by the subsequent postponements of major international sports events, and by the operational and financial consequences of the global health crisis.
