PHOTO: Landsailing in the Outback

Published on September 18th, 2013

A homemade ‘land-yacht’ has sailed into Birdsville in far south-west Queensland after a 500 kilometre-plus journey (over 310 mile) on the Birdsville Track – a notable outback road in Australia. Max Tunbridge, 78, from New South Wales, and two of his friends, made the trip, with the boat reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour in favourable winds. Mr Tunbridge says the trio had initially planned to sail on Lake Eyre but wind conditions on the Birdsville Track were too challenging. – ABC News, full story
