The Atlantic Cup: Nearly able to bite the Big Apple

Published on May 14th, 2013

(May 14, 2013) – Barring anything catastrophic for the Class40 teams over the final miles, Bodacious Dream (Dave Rearick/ Matt Scharl) will win the first leg of The Atlantic Cup.  At the time of this writing, the skyline of Manhattan is in sight, and second place Lecoq Cuisine (Eric Lecoq/ Conrad Colman) is 1.4 nm behind with 40 Degrees (Peter Harding/ Hannah Jenner) 2.8 nm further back. However, now with nightfall in New York City’s crowded waterways, nothing is certain. The tail of the fleet may also be forced to deal with a softening breeze which could open the door for a reshuffling of the fleet.

Background: The Atlantic Cup presented by 11th Hour Racing is a dedicated professional Class 40 race held annually in the U.S. The race started with a doublehanded leg on May 11 from Charleston, SC to New York, NY (648 nm), and another doublehanded leg on May 18 from New York to Newport, RI (260 NM). The event concludes on May 25-26 with inshore fully crewed (six people on board) buoy racing in Narragansett Bay. – www.atlanticcup.org
