College Sailing Chalk Talk: Season 10, Episode 2

Published on April 3rd, 2014

Chris Love provides this report on the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) 2013-2014 season along with his weekly Chalk Talk video:

(April 3, 2014) – This week in college sailing, MIT surprised many by winning both divisions at the Dellenbaugh Women’s Trophy at Brown. The squad of Rosalind Lesh and Samantha Albright squeaked by the Dartmouth Big Green to capture A division, while teammates Hanna Vincent and Lisa Sukharev-Chuyan bested U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The favorites from Yale finished second overall.

Meanwhile, back on campus in Cambridge, MA, MIT hosted the Marchiando Team Race, the last interconference team race regatta before conference nationals qualifiers, which takes place this weekend for the East Coast conferences. Stanford finished 18-4 to take the win in nasty Charles River conditions that included rain and cold. Tufts finished second, ahead of Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Roger Williams, and Boston College, in that order. Those schools will compete at Connecticut College for four spots at team race nationals at the ultra-competitive Fowle Trophy for the New England Team Race Championship.

On the opposite coast, the Stanford Women earned their own trophy at the St. Francis YC Interconference, a coed fleet race regatta sailed on San Francisco Bay. Sally Mace, Samantha Steele, Molly McKinney and Cally Tulo beat their male counterparts for the win, who were hurt by a 30-point OCS in the opening race. Cal Maritime took third.
