Spindrift 2: They’re Back

Published on December 19th, 2015

(December 19, 2015; Day 28) – Turning into the wind is not her ideal point of sail, but that is something to celebrate for the 40m maxi-trimaran Spindrift 2’s crew. It marked the moment when they had managed to get out of the area of light winds that has been slowing them down for two days.

The team is now heading towards Cape Horn at around twenty knots in a south-west wind, and with every hour reducing the deficit that had grown with the record holder, Banque Populaire V. This weekend, the sailors will finally be able to savour the sailing conditions that the Southern Ocean is famous for winds of 30-40 knots, squalls, swell and cold weather are on the itinerary.

As of 2100 UTC
Distance to finish: 8739.5 nm
Distance for 24 hours: 533.7 nm
Distance ahead of record: -282.65 nm
