Countdown to Red Bull World Final

Published on October 19th, 2016

Americans Quinn Wilson and Riley Gibbs will lead a field of 15 international youth teams when the World Final of Red Bull Foiling Generation takes place on October 21-23 in Newport, RI.

Teams will be racing the Flying Phantom, an 18-foot foiling catamaran that can reach speeds of up to 35 knots. The American duo join teams from the UK, Japan, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, France, New Zealand, Turkey, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Spain and Belgium.

The competition, the brainchild of double Olympic champions Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher from Austria, is comprised of men and women ages 18 to 21 years that have survived qualifying events in their region.

“We coach young talent and provide mentorship to prepare them to be the best youth sailors on the planet,” says Steinacher. “We want to give top young sailors the tools to follow a unique career path. They are getting their start on foiling catamarans in Red Bull Foiling Generation and potentially moving on to the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup and eventually perhaps America’s Cup itself.”

Hagara, skipper of the Red Bull Sailing Team in the Extreme Sailing Series, added: “Those who want to excel in the Red Bull Foiling Generation World Final must be extremely well prepared, technically and physically. We want to give all these ambitious up-and-coming athletes in the World Final a chance to showcase their skills.”
