Red Bull Foiling Generation World Final ready to launch

Published on November 8th, 2018

A global lineup of top young sailors from 16 countries and five continents will face off in the second-ever Red Bull Foiling Generation World Final this week on November 9-11 in Miami, FL.

Qualifiers throughout the world have produced an elite field of young men and women aged 16-20 to face off in the two-person foiling Flying Phantom catamaran, capable of reaching speeds up to 35 knots.

“This series gives outstanding young sailors the tools to follow a unique career path, and we chose the Flying Phantom because it is the fastest boat of its size,” says program co-founder Hans Peter Steinacher.

Kiwis Olivia Mackay and Micah Wilkinson won the inaugural World Final and now a new crop of future sailing stars take the stage. Coached by sports directors Steinacher and Roman Hagara, all participants gain invaluable experience. The double Olympic champions are also the masterminds behind the 2013 and 2017 Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, the regatta where victorious 2013 skipper Peter Burling learned skills that helped him win the 2017 America’s Cup helming Emirates Team New Zealand.

“Sailors from Red Bull Foiling Generation have moved on to a very high level in other events,” Hagara notes. “We will see sailors from this World Final in new classes in the future. For some, the Olympics or the Extreme Sailing Series could be the next step.”

Now it all comes down to the Red Bull Foiling Generation World Final for 16 international teams from five continents on November 9-11. All rounds held at East Fishing Pier, Key Biscayne, Florida.
