Sunfish Youth North Americans 2018

Simon Gomez Ortiz of Colombia won the 2018 Sunfish Youth North American Championship held July 31-August 1 on Lake Michigan in Waukegan, IL. The two-day regatta offered a variety of conditions from 12-15 knot winds and short chop to light air and flat seas.

Gomez Ortiz sailed well throughout the 8-race regatta beating Nicolas Marcos of Mexico by a score of 15 points to 28 points. Simon’s dominance was demonstrated by first place scores in the first, fifth, seventh and eighth races. Rounding out the top three was Alejandra Valdez of Mexico. Full results.

The attention now turns to the Sunfish Open North Americans which begin August 2. Registration has topped 70 participants from 9 different countries and 16 US states with three days of racing planned at the same venue through August 4.

Among the competitors are previous world and national champions, past Olympians and a contingent of South and Central American competitors. This year’s regatta is also a country qualifying event for the 2019 Pan American Games.
