Qualifying at Lightning North Americans

Published on August 12th, 2019

Point Abino, ONT (August 12, 2019) – The opening day of the Lightning North American Championships at the Buffalo Canoe Club saw 72 boats split into qualifying divisions and complete three races.

John and Mandy Newell (Rochester, NY) sailing with Owen MacDonald are in the lead with 6 pts. “Clear lanes were key today,” explained Newell. “We minimized risk and were conservative on the starting line. Boat speed was important and we worked hard to keep the heel angle correct. The right side paid off!”

One more qualifying race is scheduled for tomorrow, after which the fleet is split into the Championship and President’s Cup Divisions for three more days of racing.
