Slow going at Lightning North Americans

Published on August 13th, 2019

Point Abino, ONT (August 13, 2019) – The second day of the Lightning North American Championship began with an on-shore postponement to allow for a light breeze to fill in around noon, after which the fleet was sent out for the final race of the Qualifying Series.

Team Newell (Rochester, NY) continued to sail fast and won the qualifying series by 2 points over locals Larry MacDonald and David Starck. The top 34 boats will now compete for the North American Championship over the next three days in a 6-race series. The balance of the fleet will sail for the President’s Cup.

The points cut off to qualify for the Championship Division was low this year with only 25 points. “Consistency will be key to win the overall Championship,” states Starck. “The level of competition is awesome this year – it is a great mix of new and old faces.”

Racing is planned from August 12 to 16.
