Help needed to find America’s Cup team

Representing Long Beach Yacht Club, Stars + Stripes Team USA was among three aspiring America’s Cup teams to enter by the late deadline, and the only one yet to withdraw.

But after proclaiming a bold mission to create opportunities for American sailors, the team led by Mike Buckley and Taylor Canfield has disappeared from sight.

Their latest no-show was not entering the America’s Cup World Series regatta taking place from April 23-26 in Cagliari, Sardinia – a mandatory event within the America’s Cup Protocol.

Their silence is theorized to be a contractual issue with Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton, with possible implications to the number of teams which had been promised to the host city Auckland.

Already local investment has been made to complete the struggling team’s base on Auckland’s waterfront, though local media is reporting how there has been little sign of life in recent months from the USA group.

Dalton hopes to see them on the water not before too long, but acknowledges, “They’ve got to get going again pretty soon.

“We’ve been in contact with them a lot. They’re hanging in there, but are struggling for funds basically. This is a tough game. Their boat is well and build, but it’s stalled because they can’t afford to keep going at the moment.”


36th America’s Cup
In addition to Challenges from Italy, USA, and Great Britain that were accepted during the initial entry period (January 1 to June 30, 2018), eight additional Notices of Challenge were received by the late entry deadline on November 30, 2018. Of those eight submittals, entries from Malta, USA, and the Netherlands were also accepted. Here’s the list:

• INEOS Team UK (GBR)
• Malta Altus Challenge (MLT) – WITHDRAW
• Stars + Stripes Team USA (USA)
• DutchSail (NED) – WITHDRAW

Of the three late entries, only Stars+Stripes USA remains committed, but they still must complete the entry fee payment process before they will be eligible to race. They have allegedly made their initial payment but as a late entry challenger under the Protocol, they also have a liability to pay a US$1million late entry fee due in installments by October 1, 2019. However, it is not yet confirmed if they have paid the fee, nor is there any knowledge of a boat being actively built or sailing team training.
