2021 Buccaneer 18 North Americans

Published on September 19th, 2021

The 2021 Buccaneer 18 North American Championship was held September 17-19 with a fleet of 30 teams gathered on the Patuxent River in Solomons Island, MD. Participants for the 50th edition were able to bring out their best pirate behavior both on and off the water since it was also “International Talk Like a Pirate Day”.

Ed Montano along with regular crewman Trevor Bach demonstrated how to get around a race course quickly. They secured their fourth BNAC trophy by winning seven of eight races and throwing out a third place finish. Local fleet builders Jimmy and Kristi Yurko sailed consistently to finish as runner-up. John Weiss and Jay Foght finished up front in all three races on the final day to move up the leaderboard and finish third overall.

Evan and Elizabeth Scott brought out their recently purchased boat and were banished for life from the B fleet by winning a tiebreaker against local sailors Mike Major and Carrie Quinn.

Conditions were challenging for all three days of racing with plenty of breeze on the first and final days to test the competitors. Day 2 tested the race committee more by forcing them to chase the reluctant and shifty puffs around all day to allow the competitors to put a single race on the score sheet.
