IRC dropped from 2022 World Champs

Published on October 21st, 2021

After the Offshore Racing Congress (ORC), the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC), and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) had agreed for the next biennial ORC/IRC World Championship to be in 2022, the event now excludes the IRC handicap rule and will be the 2022 ORC World Championship on June 22-30 in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy. No comment was given for the change to the merged handicap event which was first held in 2018 but cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. For the Notice of Race, click here.

Editor’s note: We received this note from Bruno Finzi, ORC Chairman:
“Learning from our experience in The Hague Worlds in 2018, we have put in considerable effort in the last three years to find an agreement for scoring another combined ORC/IRC event. Regrettably this has failed to find a consensus, so YCCS and ORC were obliged to move forward for the 2022 event. Nonetheless, ORC still hopes to find an agreement with the IRC board to organize a 2023 combined event.”
