New York to San Francisco in a proa

Published on January 21st, 2022

Ryan Finn, who is attempting a solo journey from New York to San Francisco on his 36-foot Proa Jzerro, began the 13,225 nm effort on January 18, 2022. He will be attempting to eclipse the current solo world record of 81 days, with a goal of making it in 70 days.

This is one year after his first effort ended soon after it started when structural damage was too much to overcome. Jzerro weighs about 3,200 pounds, and this go around has a water filtration system, so the boat’s overall load is much lighter than his previous attempt in 2021.

“I am feeling pretty confident that this can be done,” Ryan Finn stated, aiming to have an average speed of 10 knots throughout his trip.

He is heading down to South America, hugging the Atlantic Coast. Once there he plans on working with the weather routers and getting around the horn as fast and as safely as possible.
