Bringing community together for good

Published on August 9th, 2022

When you are a cozy seaside city, known famously for hosting 12 America’s Cup defenses, boating is in your blood… or it should be and Sail Newport is trying to help in Newport, RI.

Established in 1983 as a ‘what’s next’ reaction to the loss of the 25th America’s Cup, Sail Newport has grown to become New England’s largest public sailing center and considered Rhode Island’s premier public sailing site.

But sometimes you have to lead the horse to water, and since September 2017, Sail Newport has partnered with the Newport Public School System to teach fourth graders how to sail and learn integrated STEM topics.

As part of their regular school day, students travel to the Sail Newport Sailing Center at Fort Adams one day a week for 16 weeks over their fall and spring semesters. Using Sail Newportʻs J/22s while on the water, the land-based curriculum integrates weather, marine life, habitats, soil, salinity, and environmental and ocean health.

To cover all program costs, Sail Newport will hold a multi-night fundraiser August 18-21 on its deck overlooking Newport Harbor and Brenton Cove, bringing the community together while raising essential funds to annually engage 150 children and their teachers.
