Brits fly new color for SailGP Sydney

When the next event for SailGP’s third season gets underway February 18-19 in Sydney, Australia, the colors of Emirates Airline will be on the Great Britain SailGP Team which have commenced a three-year sponsorship deal.

The world’s largest international airline, which in 2004 became the naming sponsor of the reigning America’s Cup defender New Zealand team, is betting on a new horse for the SailGP league.

While the Kiwi SailGP team flies the colors of charity partner Live Ocean, the rebranded Emirates Team GBR enter the upcoming event a click behind them in third overall but with the French and Danes close behind.

The nine international teams, led by the Australians in first, face a sporty forecast with winds in the high teens and twenties as they compete amid the enclosed venue of Sydney harbor. Racing takes place in Sydney at 16:00-17:30 AEDT (12:00-1:30am EST).

Format for 2022-23 SailGP events:
• Teams compete in identical F50 catamarans.
• Each event runs across two days.
• There are three qualifying races each day for all nine teams.*
• The top three teams from qualifying advance to a final race to be crowned event champion and earn the largest share of the $300,000 prize money to be split among the top three teams.
• The season ends with the Grand Final, which includes the Championship Final Race – a winner-takes-all match race for the $1m prize.
* Qualifying schedule increased from five to six races at France SailGP.
