New York prices for New York SailGP

Published on January 30th, 2024

The 2023-24 SailGP circuit will conclude its fourth season in North America with events in Bermuda, Halifax, New York, and San Francisco. When tickets for the New York went on sale January 30, race fan Kai Yves got a bit of a surprise… here’s her story:

After four (almost five) years of waiting, it’s a dream come true to see SailGP finally coming back to New York Harbor. I was at the 2019 event and had an amazing time.

In the years since, I suggested several times to my online friends that a course further out in the harbor with viewing areas on Governors Island could fix the Hudson River course’s problems with skyscrapers blocking the wind. To my astonishment, that’s exactly what the league decided on! (Not that I think anyone actually saw my blog posts, I’m just surprised my laywoman’s speculation was actually on to something.)

I booked my tickets when they went on sale, but found a bit of a disconnect between the information given on the SailGP site and the actual costs. The promotion advertised 85 dollar/day admission, comparable to New York Comic-Con last year (after all, Race Villages are sort of like Comic-Con for sailing fans), but on Eventbrite itself the charge was $100/day.

At the 2019 event, my mother and I walked into Brookfield Place off the street to watch the racing. For Chicago in 2022, I paid 75 dollars for a weekend pass. I’m thrilled to have SailGP come back to New York, but I worry that even on an island run by the National Park Service that can be reached by 4-dollar ferry, the full fan experience will still be less accessible to all New Yorkers than it was five years ago.
