USA closes in on 52 SUPER SERIES title

Published on August 23rd, 2025

The 52 SUPER SERIES returned to the Mediterranean on August 19-23 after two regattas in the Atlantic, and it was 2025 circuit leaders American Magic Quantum Racing that scored a resounding victory on the Bay of Palma, Mallorca, lifting the top prize at Puerto Portals 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week.

It is the third regatta title in row for Doug DeVos’ US flagged team after wins in Baiona, Spain and at last month’s Rolex TP52 World Championship in Cascais Portugal. With one regatta still to sail for the 2025 circuit, American Magic Quantum Racing are firmly on course to defend their 2024 title.

Led by Terry Hutchinson tactician with young Harry Melges IV steering and Sara Stone navigating, American Magic Quantum Racing won three of the ten races, finishing 12 clear points ahead of Takashi Okura’s Sled whilst Shawn and Tina Kang’s Hong Kong flagged Alpha + secured their first ever podium place since joining the circuit at the start of 2023 in Saint Tropez.

“It is a good result for us and we everything to play for in Porto Cervo when Doug will be back sailing with us,” said Hutchinson. “Even looking at the points here now, I think we sailed a lot better on the last day at the worlds, a lot better, so, yes, we won here, I am always happy about that but there is room for improvement and we are always thinking about that.”

Don Cowie from Sled considers a second as great for the team. “For the season title, American Magic Quantum Racing have stretched away from us a little. But if we could get rid of a couple of 10th places in the future that would help, we have stretched ahead of the guys behind us so overall we are happy with the week.”

Ian Moore navigator on Alpha + likes the progress he’s seeing. “The team has been developing through last season and this year, it feels like we are really getting to grip with the boat and the class. We have had a few changes on board and the result is this.

“We were gradually getting better during the last regatta and now to get on the podium is fantastic. We are super excited about it. This is a really, really tough fleet, you cannot say we will now be up at the top of the Super Series pack because the competition is so hard. But we have been improving at this regatta and we have a long way on our arc but here we are, from now on we will be fighting for podiums and making it tough for out competitors.”

The fifth and final regatta of the season takes place September 22-27 in Porto Cervo, Sardinia.
