World’s first Atlantic crossing by kitesurf
Published on March 10th, 2026
Belgium Koen Darras intends to complete the first kitesurf crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. His plan is to ride from the Canary Islands via Cape Verde toward the Caribbean, a feat he expects will require over approximately 60 days.
Using only a kite and board for the 3000 nm route, Darras does not intend to sleep on his equipment. A 52-foot 30-ton steel ketch will follow his effort, providing emergency support and a platform for necessary rest. His plan is to begin in late 2026.
Darras is a notable adventurer and is on a 7 Summits and 7 Seas journey, climbing the world’s highest mountains and crossing its greatest oceans. He is the first person to summit the ten highest peaks of South America and Africa in succession, and also climbed Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and the Eiger in nine days.
Editor’s note: We have contacted Darras about the dissimilar speeds of his kiting equipment and support boat. Standing by for his reply.
