Ainslie sets Round the Island Race record

Published on June 2nd, 2013

Five-time Olympic medallist Ben Ainslie set a new record during the Round the Island Race, a 50-mile race around the Isle of Wight off the south coast of the UK. Ainslie’s team sailed an AC45 catamaran, completing the course in 2 hours, 52 minutes and 15 seconds, beating the previous time, which had stood for 12 years, by 16 minutes. Ainslie’s team was one of 1,459 yachts in the event, which starts and finishes at Cowes. Ainslie dedicated the race to friend and fellow Olympic medalist Andrew Simpson, who died last month in a yachting accident in San Francisco Bay. – Full results
