Chicago to Mackinac record ratified

The World Sailing Speed Record Council has established a new world record for the 289 nm course from Chicago, IL to Mackinac Island, MI. Peter Thornton and his 13 crew on the Volvo 70 Il Mostro completed the distance in 17:59:49 (avg speed 16.06 knots) on October 16-17, 2017. The previous outright record of 18:50:32 was set during the 1998 Chicago Mackinac Race by Steve Fossett on Stars and Stripes, the catamaran previously sailed by Dennis Conner in the America’s Cup.
