Preparations ongoing for Marblehead Halifax Race

Published on January 26th, 2019

(January 26, 2019) – While it’s just about freezing temperatures in Marblehead, preparations are well underway for this summer’s race Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race 2019, just 5 months away. The Boston Yacht Club and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron host the race which starts on July 7, 2019.

The course remains the same as the last edition. The 363 nautical mile course runs slightly north of due east leaving Marblehead and sailing past Cape Ann. As you can see in the course map above, the tremendous tidal currents in the Gulf of Maine and Bay of Fundy system, as well as the ever-present changing weather conditions, create a unique tactical challenge for the racing crews.

There are 32 yachts already registered. So far, boats range in size from a Bristol 29.9 to an RP/66, and everything in between. The largest division to date is ORR-1 followed by PHR-1. Many yachts are still finalizing their ratings to determine which division they will be scored in.
