Twenty four teams for CJ Buckley

East Greenwich, RI (July 29, 2019) – Twenty-four teams with 72 boats and upwards of 160 sailors descended on Goddard Memorial State Park for the start of the 17th edition of the CJ Buckley Regatta, the Club 420 Association US Team Race National Championship to be held July 29-30.

The wind started out at 8-10 knots from the north north west and racing began at 10:30am. The breeze slowly built and swung around to a freshening southeasterly seabreeze, peaking around 14 knots. The volunteer race committee and umpire crew completed 120 races by 4:30 pm before impending storms drove everyone to the beach.

Leading the results after the first day is Revenge of the Sith with 10 wins and no losses, followed by Outfit Sailing at 9-1, and Ship Happens at 7-3.

The format is a Team Race Swiss League. Teams were randomly selected into slots 1 through 24. After each round, the overall results are seeded, creating a new 1 through 24 order. Tomorrow the overall results will be locked and selected into a knockout round, consisting of a semi-finals, petit finals, and finals. This format allows teams to sail against like competition more; creating more competitive racing.

The CJ Buckley Regatta is held every summer in East Greenwich, RI by a group of 70+ entirely volunteer race committee members, umpires, and administrative team. It is in memory of CJ Buckely, a talented junior sailor who passed away from brain cancer in 2002. The event is co-hosted by East Greenwich Yacht Club and Greenwich Bay Sailing Association, out of EGYC, GBSA and Goddard Memorial State Park.
