Dutch smoke at Kona One Worlds

Published on August 16th, 2019

Torbole, Italy (August 16, 2019) – While the opening four races yesterday at the 2019 Kona One Worlds were all about the kids duking it out with the wily veterans of the fleet, today the old guys came out swinging, with Bjorn Holm (SWE), Tim Aagesen (DEN), and Thomas Martinsen (NOR) splitting the race wins.

Not so fast, said the kids as the charge on day 2 was led by 25-yr old Huig-Jan Tak (NED), who reveled in the strong breeze to take all four bullets today to move into the lead. And 17-yr old Alex Temko (USA), 16-yr old Maverick Putnam (USA), and 18-yr old Marcus Walter (SWE) are ready to pounce in 4th, 5th and 7th positions tonight.

The Swedish team brought a talented group of youngsters from Varberg, on Sweden’s West Coast, where they attend a unique high school that combines traditional studies with the sport of their choice: soccer, field hockey, golf, and yes, windsurfing! They practice five times a week under the tutelage of coach extraordinaire Per Ringqvist, and it shows: five of them are sitting in the top 25 tonight!

The first woman after two days of racing is defending champ Andree Gauthier (CAN), but her cushion over young Johanna Hjertberg (SWE) has largely evaporated. Look out!

The 14th Kona One World Championship is being held August 15 to 18 on Lake Garda.
