New elapsed record for Chicago Mackinac Race
Published on July 14th, 2024
The Andrews 80 Maverick, owned by Sanford Burris, William and Ward Kinney, set a new elapsed time record in the 2024 Chicago Mackinac Race, completing the 289.4 nautical mile course in 22 hours, 24 minutes, 23 seconds, breaking Roy Disney and Pyewacket’s record by more than one hour, six minutes, 11 seconds.
The 115th edition had southerly winds and overnight storms providing ideal downwind conditions for the 247-boat fleet. The 37-boat Cruising Division started on July 12 with the rest of the competitors beginning their northerly route up Lake Michigan on July 13.
Burris sails with his sons and many longtime friends, and have spent the past three years upgrading Maverick. Joining the 20 crew onboard for the record was Evolution Sails founder Rodney Keenan. The team celebrated briefly as the Maverick team crossed the Race to Mackinac finish line between Mackinac Island and the Round Island lighthouse … and then kept on sailing.
Maverick is one of 25 sailboats competing in this year’s Super Mac Race, a combination of the Chicago Mackinac and the Bayview Mackinac races, which means they will continue into Lake Huron, heading south to Port Huron for a total of 495 nm.
