Does the America’s Cup have a pulse?

Published on May 14th, 2025

During the Oracle-era as America’s Cup defender, they sought to heighten the event’s commercial platform, but the terms in the Deed of Gift proved to be an obstacle. With a fresh piece of paper, the SailGP league was born, while the America’s Cup flounders in the sporting landscape.

Now controlled by Team New Zealand, they could hardly be doing less to retain interest since winning it seven months ago. Aside from drama in the British camp, and the Swiss closing shop, the other teams from the 2024 edition have been quiet too. In the meantime, SailGP continues to grow its brand.

After New Zealand skipper Peter Burling moved on after winning the past three events, the team revealed, with little fanfare, that his Aussie co-helm Nathan Outteridge was now skipper. A New Zealand team led by an Australian?

Other returnees are Andy Maloney, Sam Meech, and Blair Tuke with British Chris Draper as a new addition. Draper was the Italian helm in the 2013 America’s Cup and is currently Wing Trimmer for the Australia SailGP Team. The Kiwi team isn’t so Kiwi anymore.

Anticipated to be held in 2027, the 38th America’s Cup has no event rules, entries, or venue. Standing by for details…

UPDATE: AC38 will be held in Italy.

No entries have yet been submitted for the 38th America’s Cup as Defender New Zealand works with the Challenger of Record from Great Britain to organize the event. The two teams have agreed on some details with the venue moved to Naples, Italy after Barcelona, Spain declined hosting another edition. Racing will be in the spring and summer of 2027.
