Road Ahead to Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Published on August 16th, 2018

The highlight event for Olympic class sailors in 2018 was the Sailing World Championships held August 2-12 in Aarhus, Denmark. With that now past and recharge occurring, travel will soon occur again on the road to Tokyo 2020.

A global World Cup Series, World Championships, Continental regattas, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic test event and major Olympic class events will help prepare the sailors for the Olympic Games. Many of these will also be crucial qualifying events for countries that have not yet gained entry to the Games.

The World Cup Series continues to provide the strongest broadcast and media platform in Olympic Class sailing to promote sailors and national teams, creating value for sponsors, and supporters of sailors and national authorities.

The 2018-19 World Cup Series begins next month at the site of sailing for the 2020 Olympics in Enoshima, Japan. From there the circuit comes to the USA for a stopover in Miami before heading to Europe with an event in Genoa (Italy) and culminating at the venue for the 2024 Olympics in Marseille, France.

Enoshima will host the first round of the 2019-20 series with Miami and Genoa following before a return to Enoshima for the Final as sailors and teams to maximise their opportunity to compete at the Olympic venue and to reduce travel and logistics costs for teams ahead of Tokyo 2020.
