Is this the future of sailing?

The SailGP league is like nothing else in the sport, having transformed a sailing regatta into an entertainment product. Now in its sixth season, the league has an established platform, with SailGP Managing Director Andrew Thompson commenting on the future of sailing:

“I think the future of sailing is entirely foiling,” he said. “Sailors used to grow up on displacement boats like Lasers but the youngsters today are foiling from the start.

“In the next years, there will be this whole cohort of young men and women who have grown up on these boats.

“It is going to create a complete change at the top end of the sport where people will start aging out, and they will be replaced by these kinds of young 20-year-olds male and females who’ll just go and kick everybody’s ass, quite frankly.”

Displacement boats like Lasers?  Foiling from the start? Hmm…
